Super Meat Boy is finally coming to Sony platforms next week, but the game PlayStation owners will experience is slightly different than the one that launched on Xbox 360 and PC in 2010.

If you’ve played Super Meat Boy in the past and plan on grabbing it for PlayStation 4 or Vita next week, you’ll notice something quite different about it.

According to a post on the Team Meat blog, via Destructoid, the game will not contain the same soundtrack as its PC and Xbox 360 counterparts.

Designer Tommy Refenes said the reason was due to not being able to secure the rights to the original score composed by Danny Baranowsky.

“Long story short, we couldn’t secure the rights to include the old soundtrack with the re-release of the game on PS4/Vita. Now don’t be too bummed because we’re not,” said Refenes. “Every dark cloud has a silver lining, and the silver lining on this dark cloud turned into an opportunity to work with our most favorite artists to rescore Super Meat Boy.”

Baranowsky said on his bloghe no longer maintains “a working relationship with Team Meat,” and when approached by the developers regarding the license, he felt the “fee and exposure through PSN offered” wasn’t enough to consider accepting the deal.

“I wish them and the new artists the best of luck with the game, he said. “I’ve heard rumors that there were creative differences between us; this is not true, or at least was never communicated to me.”

The new score was created by composers Matthias Bossi and Jon Evans (The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth), David “Scattle” Scatliffe (Hotline Miami) and Laura Shigihara (Plants vs. Zombies).

Danny Baranowsky (born April 5, 1984), also known as Danny B or by the company name dB Soundworks, is an American electronic music composer, composing music mainly for indie films and indie games.[2] He founded dB Soundworks to sell and promote his music. He is most known for providing the music for games such as Canabalt,[1]Super Meat Boy,[3]The Binding of Isaac,[4] and Crypt of the NecroDancer.[5] Baranowsky has also contributed to the soundtrack of the 2014 Amplitude remake.[6]

Career[edit]

Baranowsky first came into contact with video game music in 2001, when he became a member of online game remix community OverClocked ReMix. At this time, Baranowsky was hoping to become a film composer.[7]

When Adam Saltsman, who would later develop Canabalt, sent Baranowsky an incomplete version of Gravity Hook, which Saltsman intended to keep free of music, Baranowsky decided to write a track for it anyway. When Baranowsky sent 'Track A' back to Saltsman, he was really impressed by the music. After finishing the soundtrack of Gravity Hook, Saltsman introduced Baranowsky to Edmund McMillen, for whom he later composed the soundtrack of Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac.[7][8]

He co-composed Desktop Dungeons with Grant Kirkhope and composed the entirety of the Crypt of the Necrodancer soundtrack.

Reception[edit]

Rory Young from Game Rant described Baranowsky as 'amazingly talented' because of his work on Super Meat Boy.[9]
