It seems like only yesterday Meat Boy and Bandage Girl were escaping from an exploding laboratory in the sky. Now it’s the current year, and they’ve welcomed their daughter Nugget into the world. Their days enjoying life as a family came to an abrupt end when Dr. Fetus beat the snot out of them with a rusty shovel, and kidnapped Nugget! Now it’s up to Meat Boy and Bandage Girl to rescue.

Super Meat Boy Forever is an upcoming independent video game developed by Team Meat for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Android, Microsoft Windows and Linux. Originally planned as a mobile-only version of Super Meat Boy,[2]Super Meat Boy Forever was gradually developed into a full-fledged sequel featuring a new control scheme and randomly generated levels.[3]

Gameplay[edit]

Super Meat Boy Forever expands on Super Meat Boy's challenging gameplay, as well as the main villain Dr. Fetus. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl's child Nugget has been kidnapped by Dr. Fetus and the couple must work together to rescue her. Both characters can kick and punch enemies and must avoid deadly obstacles to save Nugget. The control scheme uses two buttons.[4] Levels are randomly generated based on the player's skill level using premade 'chunks' created by the designers.[5]

Development[edit]

Development for Super Meat Boy Forever was announced in 2014 as mobile-only sequel to the original Super Meat Boy. Team Meat founders Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes originally teased the project as a 'live action stealth game' called A Voyeur for September, but this was later revealed to be an anagram for Super Meat Boy Forever.[2] After a few years of little to no public updates, Edmund McMillen left Team Meat and began focusing on other intellectual property such as The Binding of Isaac and The End Is Nigh. Refenes said to not 'hold your breath' expecting McMillen to come back after Super Meat Boy Forever is released.[6]

In 2017, Refenes restarted the project as full-fledged sequel and several new team members joined Team Meat to help with development. Among the new team members were Kyle Pulver (Offspring Fling, Snapshot), and Temmie Chang who worked on the art for Undertale.[6] Ridiculon, who composed the music for the PlayStation 4 version of Super Meat Boy, returned to compose the sequel's soundtrack.[7] Refenes explains that even though the game is still coming to mobile, this version was developed primarily as a console game.[4] The new version of Super Meat Boy Forever was revealed at PAX Prime 2017. The game was championed by Nintendo during their Nindies Summer 2017 Showcase,[8] and the PAX demo of the game was well received by the media.[4] The game was scheduled for an April 2019 release[9], but was pushed back to a later date on consoles with a late 2020 release for Steam.[10]

Team Meat fans will have to wait a bit longer as Super Meat Boy Forever has been delayed for a brief amount of time. The developer sent out a letter on Twitter announcing the delay.

The game will be releasing “after but not too far after April 2019,” according to the studio. The release date will be given during the game’s next trailer. Super Meat Boy Forever was initially scheduled for this month.

“We’ve been knocking out the last bits of Super Meat Boy Forever at record speeds while keeping a healthy and sustainable pace,” said Team Meat. They later mentioned, “We could have sacrificed our minds, bodies, and social lives to make April 2019 but that’s stupid. Team Meat isn’t some studio owned by an Evil Asshat corporation that has say over what we do and how we do it.”

While this is just speculation, seeing Evil Asshat with capitalized letters seems to hint at Team Meat’s feelings towards the problems developers reportedly have faced with EA recently, not to mention the overall issue of crunch within the video game industry.

The developer recently showed off a demo of the game at PAX East 2019 last week and mentioned the delay to the event goers. They decided to spread that news further online today.

Super Meat Boy Forever is a sequel to the 2010 indie classic. Dr Fetus is back, but this time, he has kidnapped Meat Boy and Bandage Girl’s baby, Nugget. To save her, the couple must go through challenging (but dynamically changing to adjust the difficulty) levels and punch and kick their way through enemies.

While commonly misconcepted as an endless runner, this game has two buttons as the two characters run by themselves. You can jump, attack, slide and dive. “You can get a surprising amount of movement and precision by designing levels that complement your controls,” the developer said on the game’s official website. “Super Meat Boy felt great because there was a marriage of level design and controls, Super Meat Boy Forever is no different.”
